Customer Rating: Summary: Easy Read, Shotgunning Fundamentals; Top Drawer Comment: "The Orvis Wing-Shooting Handbook"
One might be surprised that the store selling Fly-Fishing goods is also the producer of one of the really fine books on Shotgunning.
The author explains the INSTINCTIVE nature of Shotgunning first, then moves directly into the fundamentals of Stands, Posture and so on.
The book goes on to cover Gun FIT etc.
This is a book that one might easily overlook. There are other books available, but I find that they exhibit common faults which the Orvis book avoids.
For example, many books offer well over 6 to 8 chapters just on the subject of Shooting clays (Trap & Skeet) and allow their text to become bogged down into this single aspect of Shotgunning. That's all fine; but what if one primarily wishes to hunt small game?
Other books commonly go into an overabundant detail, showing page after page of very beautiful and also very expensive Over/Under and SideBySide Shotguns, and go into even further detail by showing different makes of the same. I find this rather irrelevent, when all one wants to do first is learn to shoot, rather than to adopt an attitude of adoration toward a firearm.
Other books also waste many pages with lovely color photos of hunters and the birds they have taken. Magazines show as much, and it hardly imparts necessary knowledge.
The Orvis Book however, goes directly into the funamentals of shooting and never loses perspective, which is why I sincerely recommend it. As a paperback, it is far cheaper than a hardback. When mine arrived, it was good to see that it was well, and I do mean VERY WELL illustrated.

Customer Rating: Summary: Hard to go wrong with Orvis Comment: When Orvis gets behind a project, it is usually one of quality & this book does not dissapoint.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Orvis Wing - Shooting Handbook Comment: Great book and a MUST HAVE FOR PHEASANT HUNTERS.
Customer Rating: Summary: If you get one shotgunning book this is it... Comment: Excellent for a beginner but I am sure that even a seasoned pro will find good insights here. Pay special attention to the many knowledge "nuggets" that abound in this book. I started using a highlighter on these passages... they are that good!
Customer Rating: Summary: I've been it doing all wrong Comment: I've been hunting dove for years, albeit sparingly each season. This little book definitely showed me the error of my shooting ways, and I'm going to have find some time to shoot some clay pigeons to work on this technique. Don't expect to read this book and think that you can bag a bunch of birds the next day. Bruce Bowlen does a masterful job of describing and explaining this English techique of wing-shooting. It makes perfect sense to use this system for hunting birds, but my body and brain are going to need some time to program it in to where I can shoot this way. For being an average shooter, I'm more confident that I'll be able to bring home quite a few more birds next season, once I get the hang of this technique.
